Rose Who? — Yasmin Finney’s New ‘Doctor Who’ Character
Astute Doctor Who fans’ ears perked up when they heard the name of actress Yasmin Finney’s new character, “Rose.” Rose Tyler was the first and, arguably, most important companion of the Nu-Who era, being the person to bring the Doctor out of his trauma-informed, post-Last Great Time War, wanderings and back in contact with his favorite creatures — his moral anchor — the humans of Earth.
Rose’s story was complex and, in many ways, the initial return of Doctor Who as a series was about her more than The Doctor.
So when the Heartstopper star, Finney, was announced as another Rose by the writer/showrunner who created the first one, Russell T. Davies, it seemed more than a coincidence.
As a celebration of Yasmin Finney’s birthday, the BBC released another shocker about our new Rose: that she was the daughter of Tenth (and soon to be Fourteenth) Doctor’s Companion, Donna Noble.
Donna’s story is far too complex to tackle here (but if you’re of stout heart and a hardy constitution, you can dive into it here), but suffice to say that she does not remember her time with The Doctor or her encounter with original Rose and, thus, it is a mystery why she would have chosen that name for her daughter: a mystery surely to be investigated when Donna returns to meet a new Doctor with the same face as the one she had traveled with.
Finney has recently announced that her character would encounter both David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor and Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth; so expect to be seeing a lot of Ms. Finney when The Doctor begins airing on Disney+ in November.
I can’t wait.
