Into the Whoniverse: A Doctor Who Panel
In San Diego Comic-Con’s famous Hall H, The Doctor held court.
Welcoming Doctor Who stars Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson, as well as show-runner Russell T Davies, into San Diego Comic-Con’s famous, and massive, Hall H, host Josh Horowitz (Happy Sad Confused) joked that Gibson should make it snow like her character Ruby Sunday did repeatedly throughout her first season on Doctor Who.
And, as Gibson laughed, a light dusting of snow dropped from the ceiling of the hall, “This is so embarrassing! You can’t take me anywhere!”
And with that, the lighthearted and ebullient panel began.
Teasing around the edges of next season Gibson announced Jonah Hauer-King — Prince Eric in the 2023 remake of The Little Mermaid — as a recurring guest star in the next series, which has already wrapped filming.

Soon after, Russell Davies revealed that shooting had begun on the new Whoniverse spin-off (teased in last season’s 73 Yards) The War Between the Land and the Sea featuring the return of classic Who monsters, The Sea Devils.
The new show is a five-part mini-series to be aired on Disney+ featuring Loki’s Gugu Mbatha-Raw (previously appearing on Doctor Who as the sister of Tenth Doctor companion Martha Jones) and Russell Tovey (Sherlock/The Flash/Being Human). The series will also bring back from last season’s Doctor Who, Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim.
“When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”
The last big reveal of the panel was a special video clip of Nicola Coughlin (Derry Girls) introducing a preview for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special. The new special, written by former show-runner and writer of last season’s Boom, Stephen Moffat, brings back another classic Who monster, The Silurians.
The panel, much like most of last season, was a giddy celebration of the joys of Doctor Who fandom and a well-earned victory lap for the show’s stars and show-runner.
Doctor Who Season One is available now on Disney+.
