‘Doctor Who’ Teases an Old Enemy in a Cryptic Trailer

‘Doctor Who’ debuts on Disney+ this winter with a surprisingly obscure character.

Doctor Who, the classic British science fiction series is about to turn sixty years old this year, has a novel take on continuity which can be summed up thusly: if it exists, it counts. So, while it is unlikely that you’ll find the next Star Wars film referencing Jaxxon, the human-sized green rabbit from the early Marvel comics, it is not out of character at all for Doctor Who to bring back a little known character from a 1980s comic strip, Doctor Who and the Star Beast, featured over seven issues of Doctor Who Weekly.

Say hello to Beep the Meep.

Beep the Meep

He may look cuddly, but he is a Wrarth Warrior and will destroy us all if given the chance!

Early teasers for the anniversary season of the long-running hit science fiction series showed flashes of a character that looked like Beep, but buried in this cryptic trailer that the BBC released yesterday is even more evidence.

Here’s the trailer…

However, the Beeb actually showed it backwards, here it is reversed…

Ok, not that much clearer, but you can hear David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor say, “Cryptic. I hate that.”

You can also hear returning companion Donna Noble’s (Catherine Tate) voice saying, “Why did this face come back?” which may refer to The Doctor or her own: hard to say at this point.

There is also a brief shot of the chamber in which the hand which eventually allowed the creation of the “Metacrisis Doctor,” about which you may want to refer back to my article, Doctor Who: A Chaotic Primer, Part Two.

Part of the Binary Code from the Teaser

Following the trailer, the BBC, briefly, tweeted a bit of binary code which enterprising fans began to try and interpret. The Beeb took the tweet down quickly, but the code appeared in the short teaser as well and, if you translate from binary to letters, reads, “7!@THE#!!’’ ^@^@ STAR &% #(BEAST(*2'.” (Because I’m that kind of person, I checked and it really does translate to this.)

The Star Beast being Beep’s origin story, we can be relatively sure that our favorite furry Wrarth Warrior will be making his television debut this November.

Watch Doctor Who on Disney+ starting this November.
