‘Doctor Who’ News from the Source
One of the great joys of the Russell T. Davies eras as showrunner of Doctor Who is that he loves to talk. His regular column in Doctor Who Magazine puts you closer to the source of information about the show’s production than you are likely to find anywhere else in television. If you want to know what’s happening on Doctor Who, there is no more definitive source.
This month not only did Davies confirm the titles of the three specials coming in November: The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle, but he also pointed out that for The Star Beast, originally a comic strip adventure in what was known then as Doctor Who Monthly, he consulted and got approval from the story’s creators Pat Mills (2000 AD) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen).
Also in the issue, script editor Scott Handcock drops this tantalizing nugget about the first day of shooting for Jinkx Monsoon’s new villain, “What isn’t announced is that Jinkx’s first day on set teams her with an unexpected name from the Tom Baker era.”Being the most popular Doctor of the classic series’ run, a character from that era is big news for Who fandom! Of course, it could be the Fourth Doctor himself, Tom Baker, but his poor health and inability to join fellow classic Doctors Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy for a special episode in 2022 leaves this seeming unlikely.
Finally, this issue of DWM points out that around the time that David Tennant returns to reprise his performance as The Doctor at the end of the year, he will also be reprising his voice-over role as Droid Master Huyang in the Disney+ series Ahsoka airing in August. And since we love all things Disney and Star Wars and Marvel, it is worth pointing out that Tennant has involvement across all three of these franchises.
Though it was pre-Disney, Tennant gives, arguably, the most terrifying performance of a Marvel villain to date in the Netflix series Jessica Jones as Kilgrave — The Purple Man. He also, at the complete other end of the spectrum, is the current voice of Scrooge McDuck, appearing in the revamped DuckTales series as well as in the Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers film. And finally, for completeness’ sake, he is the voice of Igor the Door in an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

Doctor Who returns with David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor, followed by Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, in November on the BBC in the U.K. and Disney+ everywhere else.
